Significance: Ganga water is used to purify — the shrine, the household, and the worshipper. It is sprinkled over the idol during abhishek, poured into the kalash at sthapana, carried through a new home at griha pravesh, and given at the last rites. Water drawn at Gangotri, closest to the source, is traditionally held to be the purest, which is why it is bottled there rather than further down the river.
