Gangajal – Holy Ganga Water from Gangotri

Sealed Gangajal bottled at Gangotri, the Himalayan town where the Ganga emerges from the glacier and begins its course as the Bhagirathi. Three sizes, so you can keep a small bottle on the mandir shelf and a larger one put by for ceremonies.

Every household keeps Gangajal, and it tends to be the thing you notice you have run out of on the morning you need it. The 100ml is the everyday bottle; the 500ml is the one to have in before a havan, a griha pravesh or a family ceremony.

Significance: Ganga water is used to purify — the shrine, the household, and the worshipper. It is sprinkled over the idol during abhishek, poured into the kalash at sthapana, carried through a new home at griha pravesh, and given at the last rites. Water drawn at Gangotri, closest to the source, is traditionally held to be the purest, which is why it is bottled there rather than further down the river.
