Brass Peacock Diya on Pedestal

A footed brass diya with a scalloped, bead-edged bowl raised on a fluted pedestal, crowned by a peacock with its tail fanned behind. Cast in solid brass and noticeably heavy in the hand — this is the centrepiece lamp of the group rather than an everyday diya.

The raised bowl lifts the flame above the level of a thali or a shelf so it can be seen from across the room, and the weight of the base means it will not tip if it is knocked. Finished bright rather than antiqued, so it sits well alongside brass pooja ware and picks up the gold in a mandir.

Significance: The peacock is the vahana of Lord Kartikeya and a companion of Saraswati, and appears throughout temple metalwork as a symbol of beauty, of the coming rains, and of the shedding of pride. A raised diya of this kind is lit at the start of aarti and left burning through the ceremony.
